A mid-sized city in the greater Phoenix region of the south-central part of the state, Fountain Hills, Arizona, lies surrounded by the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and Scottsdale. It is about 35 miles northeast of Phoenix and less than 20 miles northeast of Scottsdale. Between 1990 and 2000, the city was one of the fastest-growing in the region. Since the 2000 census, the population had risen by nearly a quarter as of July 2008, to more than 25,000. Fountain Hills makes up an area of more than 18 square miles of land.
The city is recognized locally for its large fountain, which is the world's fourth tallest. Water spews to a height of more than 562 feet once per hour. Residents of Fountain Hills were measured in 2008 to have a median annual household income of nearly $77,000 for a per capita income of almost $40,000. Meanwhile, at that time, Fountain Hills homes were measured to have a median value of more than $423,000, putting Fountain Hills real estate in about the middle bracket regionally. The city is conveniently located just about 20 miles from Phoenix's large commercial international airport.
Children who live in Fountain Hills are served by the local Fountain Hills Unified School District #98, which has four schools: McDowell Mountain Elementary School for grades K-2, Four Peaks Elementary School for grades 3-5, Fountain Hills Middle School for grades 6-8 and Fountain Hills High School for grades 9-12. There is a also a charter school in the community that serves grades K-8 and the private school Faith Mountain Christian Center. The city's economy is quite strong, and in October 2009, Fountain Hills had an astounding low unemployment rate of just 4.3% despite the ongoing slump of the greater U.S. economy. Arizona's unemployment rate on average at that time was 9.3%. Construction, health care and education are the most popular industries in which residents work.
Events celebrated in Fountain Hills include two annual fairs: a local art fair and the Fountain Hills Great Fair, with a carnival and art. The city is also home to the only Thanksgiving Day parade west of the Mississippi River. Attractions in the city include the Fountain Hills Community Center, the Fountain Hills Golf Course, Fountain Lake and Fountain Park. Additionally, the Charles W. Juels' Fountain Hills Observatory is nearby. Fountain Hills residents are, on average, older than other communities, with a median age of more than 46 years, compared with Arizona's average of more than 34.
